National Whale Day 2011

Saturday 2 July 2011

National Whale Day was launched in 2008 by IFAW (International Fund for Animal Welfare).

It is a day for all Australians to celebrate their love of whales, as well as draw attention to some of the threats they face today, which include whaling, climate change, ship strikes, marine debris and ocean noise.

In 2007, Mosman Council adopted a mother humpback whale in support of the Humpback Whale Migration Icon Project.

Mosman’s whale has been named ‘Gamarada’ by Mosman Reconciliation.

Gamarada (pronounced Gamada) comes from the Sydney Aboriginal language and means friend.

Of course, it’s not just about one whale, but a symbol of protection and care for our marine environment as a whole!
