Alexander Lavroff winner of the 2009 Mosman Art Prize
Alexander Lavroff - Amish bucket with capsicums in colander
Mosman Art Gallery is proud to announce the winner of the annual Mosman Art Prize, now celebrating its 62nd year.
For the first time in the history of the Mosman Art Gallery the entries exceeded 900, reaching a record number of 916 paintings.
This year we were very fortunate in having the first winner of the Mosman Art Prize and eminent Australian artist, Margaret Olley, as the judge for the competition. It has obviously had a huge impact on the number of entries we have received.
The Mosman Art Prize is Australia’s longest running and most prestigious municipal art prize. An acquisitive painting prize, the winning entries form the basis of the Mosman Art Collection, a valuable and historic collection which surveys Australian painting since 1947.
Artist Alexander Lavroff has won the major Mosman Council Art Prize of $20,000 with his still life painting Amish bucket with capsicums in colander.
Additional non-acquisitive prizes which have been awarded in the 2009 Mosman Art Prize are listed as follows:
- The Allan Gamble Memorial Art Prize ($3,000) for the best artwork with the theme of the built environment has been won by Suzanne Alexander for her painting Looking for Sydney, Cockatoo Island.
- The Commendation Prize ($1,000), has been won by artist, Craig Waddell for his painting “Olley” (The General).
- House of Phillips Fine Art, Young Emerging Artists’ Award ($1,000) has been won by Adelaide Slater for her painting Passages.
In addition there will be a Viewer’s Choice Prize of $1,000 sponsored by Mosman Toyota, to be announced at the close of the exhibition.
- See the 2009 Mosman Art Prize page for artists’ statements and the judge’s report.
Winning artists Alexander Lavroff and Suzanne Alexander will talk about their artworks and their painting careers at the Mosman Art Gallery on Sunday 16 August at 2pm. Admission is free and includes afternoon tea.
