New look for Avenue Road unveiled

Work on the intersection at Avenue and Military Roads has been completed.

The intersection was renewed as a part of the Military Road Streetscape Upgrade project and includes wider footpaths, a raised pedestrian crossing, landscaping, lighting and installation of new street furniture to beautify the area and improve pedestrian access and safety.

The intersection now features a tribute to one of Mosman’s most dynamic public figures.

Her Excellency, Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales, unveiled a memorial to the late Councillor Dom Lopez OAM on Saturday.

Dom was a five term Mayor, his last being in 2008/09 when he led the current Council. First elected in 1968, he served until 1977 when he did not seek re-election and then again from September 1980 to his passing.

He was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 1994 Australia Day Honours List for his service to Local Government and in 2001 the Centenary Medal for service to the Mosman community as a long-serving Councillor and Mayor.

Dom’s eldest son, Perry, and Mayor of Mosman, Councillor Anne Connon, also spoke at the ceremony, the Mayor saying that the longevity of Dom’s service and dedication as an Alderman, Councillor, Deputy Mayor and Mayor of Mosman would never be equaled.
