The Mayor's Column
Who do you call when you are in trouble? When a vehicle is blocking your driveway? When the footpath is impeded? When your property is hit by graffiti? When your pet is missing? When attacked by a dog? When your neighbours are noisy?
You call the Rangers. They come day and night to respond to your call and sort out your problem.
Mosman Council has a team of Rangers who are trained to deal with many routine situations but must also be ready to deal with the unexpected. Here are a few of the stories I have heard lately.
Rangers were called out to deal with a number of feral roosters running around our reserves. How did roosters get to Balmoral and Clifton Gardens? Another of life’s little mysteries. An intrepid Ranger proved brave and also softhearted. He caught the frightened birds and delivered to the vet to be rehomed.
Two Rangers dealt with a life-threatening situation one night last summer. “Help, Help” they heard, a cry of appeal coming from a rocky stretch at Clifton Gardens. Without hesitation, they investigated, one wading out into the dark waters, to find an injured fisherman lying on the rocks. He was suffering back injuries, the Rangers applied first aid and assisted the emergency services locate and transport him to hospital. How lucky was he?
Recently, a man suffered a fit in the street and Rangers were there in an instant to administer appropriate first aid.
A few weeks ago I received a glowing testimony to the efficiency and kindness of Ranger Tony, who assisted a distressed resident and his three year old daughter to shelter from the rain, provided clothing and nappies from his own home and found a locksmith, when they were locked out of home.
In the last 12 months, Rangers have reunited 238 lost pets and their owners. One of them was me. I was so grateful for the help and kindness shown in a distressing situation when my dog went missing.
Rangers have a very significant role in community events such as the Mosman Festival and New Year’s Eve. Rangers are on duty in Mosman seven days a week, 365 days a year from 6am to late. Rangers are not permitted to deal with situations involving alcohol or violence, but are obliged to call the police to deal with such matters.
Contact Mosman Council Rangers on 9978 4081, 041 978 4081 or through the Council’s switchboard.
