The Mayor's Column
My grandchildren, five-year-old twins Isaac and Eliana, started school last week, along with about sixty thousand other NSW kindy kids taking this huge step in their young lives. Isaac’s only concern was that he would have to do homework, which he suspected was not a good thing.
To take the pain out of homework, Mosman Library can help. Primary school children are offered a friendly and supportive environment in which to study and complete homework and assignments. A Librarian is on duty each week day afternoon during school terms to assist with schoolwork as well as offer advice on recreational reading. Access to the Internet and on line databases is also available.
The Library hosts Information evenings for parents of children in the last year of primary school or first year of high school. Students are welcome to accompany parents to learn about reference collections, local studies resources, searching the Internet, plus the various services and facilities available to children and teens. A team of Librarians, specialising in different areas, is on hand to answer all your questions. The first such evening for the year will be in March and will be advertised through the Library, press and local schools.
The Library can also assist with other important aspects of the student’s life, such as making friends and achieving a sense of belonging. The Starfish Club is a reading club for 8-to 11 year olds, held once a month. Children enjoy games and craft while sharing poetry and stories and having fun with peers. Similar programs for teens, including Wires, a monthly youth group, are also available.
