The Mayor's Column

Cr Denise Wilton

Recently NSW Health Department research found that Sydney’s North Shore suburbs are the healthiest places to live in the State, with Mosman near the top of the list, and residents of remote towns having the worst health.

There is no joy in this. It is a distressing report on the disadvantages for people living in these areas with lack of access to medical care and health services and general lack of funding and resources. Aboriginal people in these areas are even worse off, as they suffer more illnesses and have a life expectancy of about 20 years less than their nonindigenous counterparts. The report is a stark reminder of their plight and the inequality of the health care system.

In Mosman, we have much to be thankful for and Council fulfils a responsibility to residents to care for their health and well being. A lot of this care is preventative, providing services to keep people well, physically and emotionally. Our Community Development Department is the heart of council, starting with the youngest who are offered free immunisation and a variety of child care services. Teens have a Youth Centre where they can network and be involved in programmes dealing with the issues young people face in today’s society.

Older residents have an array of services including Meals on Wheels, Transport for Shopping and appointments, Social Support, volunteers visit and assist with light duties such as shopping and bill paying, dinners in the Senior’s Centre and educational and recreational opportunities for mind and body. The Carers Support Group offers service to help those who give so much to keep disabled loved ones at home.

Mosman’s environment is conducive to good health and well being. Our beaches are cleaner because of our storm water management devices, our parks provide green space for sport and recreation and vegetation to filter the toxins from the air. Sporting codes are strong and the newly approved facility at Cross Street will be a bonus for hockey and netball. There are children’s playgrounds with activities for all ages. Mosman’s bike track will link with the North Sydney and the Peninsula.

A variety of Clubs are also supported by Council in recognition of their social and physical importance to the community.

We are so lucky. But spare a thought for our fellow Australians who are doing it tough.
