The Mayor's Column

Cr Denise Wilton

See the stars on Saturday 31 March when the lights of Sydney go out from 7.30 p.m. for one hour.

Mosman is very proud to join Earth Hour, the WWF and Sydney Morning Herald campaign to turn off the city lights to raise awareness of global warming and show that we can take action in reducing green house emissions.

Mosman Council will be turning off lights and contacting households, community groups and businesses to encourage everyone to support this campaign.

We hope our restaurants will host candle lit dinners, as are many of Sydney’s leading restaurants.

Our message to everyone is:

  • Turn off your lights for one hour.
  • Unplug appliances which are usually on standby, using 10% of an average household’s electricity.
  • Host a candle lit dinner at home.
  • Get neighbours together for a moonlit BBQ.
  • Star gaze at Sydney Observatory form 7.30 to 9.30

Mosman Council is also considering a number of other environmental actions at our meeting this week. We aim to set up Sustainability Action Group, consisting of some Councillors, staff members, experts and interested community representatives. We have residents with valuable knowledge and experience to share and we encourage you to become involved.

That group’s first task will be to discuss holding a community forum, a day of appropriate speakers, stalls and events to promote sustainability. Council is also investigating setting up a Community Environmental Centre as on ongoing environmental resource. Council is adopting a Water Savings Action Plan which includes measures such as installing water efficient devices and rainwater tanks in Council buildings and on ovals.

Do not forget. Mosman supports earth Hour on Saturday 31 March. Turn off your lights. See the stars. Care for Planet Earth.
