Come and see the wonderful new exhibitions at Mosman Art Gallery. In these days when environmental issues are at the forefront of our minds, these are two concurrent exhibitions inspired by love of landscape and nature.

Earthly Encounters, the ceramic component of the exhibitions, comes from the earth and hands of rural NSW in a collection from Orange Regional Gallery. Works are from some of Australia’s most esteemed potters.

The other exhibition is poetically named The Place Where Three Dreams Cross, presenting works from artists in Tasmania, Western Australia and Central Australia. The works explore the changes in our environment and relationship with the land over generations.

Mosman has every reason to be proud of the Gallery, housed in the graceful old 1915 building which was once the Methodist Church, designed by the prominent architects Walter Burley Griffin and Burcham Clamp. The Gallery attracts high quality and varied exhibitions from local, national and international sources.

Our own community is rich in talented artists, annually showcased in three of our most popular competitions:

  • the recently held ‘Artists of Mosman: 2088’, open to all who live in Mosman and members of the Gallery.
  • The Mosman Art Prize, an acquisitive prize through which over 60 years we have acquired a most remarkable and valuable collection, including some of Australia’s best-known artists. It attracts artists of high repute vying for the prestige of winning.
  • the Mosman Youth Art Prize. Wow, what a zing to see the exuberant and exciting works of our younger artists. Coming up in May, it includes painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography and digital media.

Throughout the year there is a programme of exhibitions, gallery talks, seminars and formal lectures, available to all. Local schools work closely with the Gallery to provide rich experiences in tours, workshops and educational materials.

The fantastic Gallery staff is strongly supported by the Friends of the Gallery who enjoy a range of activities in company with others interested in the visual arts. The Gallery could not do without the support and commitment of the dedicated volunteers who are multi skilled in catering, research, administration, fund raising and very importantly in sharing their knowledge of the exhibitions through guided tours.

The Mosman Art Gallery is on the corner of Art Gallery Way (formerly Short Street) and Myahgah Road. One of our best-known artists, Ken Done, has generously offered to supply prominent signage to better show people the way to Mosman Art Gallery and Community Centre.

We hope to see you there often.
