Mosman Council Rangers and Harbourside Local Area Command Police are working together to make Mosman a safer place. Local Solutions to Local Crime and Safety Issues is a plan which represents a commitment by Council and Police to be pro-active in crime prevention and support services.

People can be confused about the duties of Council Rangers as compared to Police. This plan identifies the roles of both Police and Rangers in a range of activities, including communication, combating crime, community involvement and emergency management. In a working partnership, Council shares Rangers’ data with our local Police to build up a profile of crime in the area and work on strategies for crime prevention.

Council employs 12 Rangers, trained to cope with a wide variety of matters and they are on duty seven days a week from 6am to 10pm and available if required to work 24 hours a day.

Rangers must legally enforce our parking restrictions, but do not have a “quota” or instruction to maximise parking fines.

They respond to an enormous range of calls regarding pollution, graffiti, barking or stray dogs, building site infringements such as working out of designated hours or blocking footpaths, abandoned vehicles and dumped rubbish. Importantly they have a reassuring presence generally as they patrol our public places including beaches and reserves to address anti-social behaviour and unsafe practices.

Rangers are also responsible for handling emergency calls regarding fallen trees, blocked drains, damaged and unsafe buildings. They will contact the appropriate agencies to deal with such things and contact Police in matters in which they have no jurisdiction, such as under age drinking, violence or serious crime.

Rangers work very closely with Police and other agencies and are trained to be part of a vital network set up to respond to any critical incidents, be they natural or man made disasters. For example, Rangers worked tirelessly during the violent storms on the June long weekend as a vital part of the team including Mosman State Emergency Services, Harbourside Police, NSW Fire Brigade and contractors who worked in some of the worst weather conditions in Mosman’s history.

Regarding Mosman SES, we are very pleased to announce that Jean Tyacke has been re-appointed as the local controller for another two years. She has given devoted service to us in this role for 14 years. She always carries out her duties in the most professional manner, inspiring loyalty in her highly trained team and working in strong partnership with other agencies for our safety and security.
