The Mayor's Column
Who would have thought it, but gumboots are a must have fashion item this year. Not the old black rubber ones, but zippy coloured and patterned ones.
A recent article about the fashion phenomenon even suggested they might be suitable for wearing to work and I was proud to wear my rainbow coloured boots to a Council meeting!
The Mosman Young Achievers group have been quick to pick up on this trend and make a business of it and their project this year is to hand paint and sell this must have item of apparel.
The Young Achievers Australia Programme is set up Australia wide for Year 11 students in state and private schools to give young people real life experience in work based activities, easing the transition from school to work.
Mosman YAA is supported annually by Mosman Council with a grant of $1000 and facilitation of a mentoring programme. Mentors are drawn from professionals and business people in our community who are willing to share their skills and experience to develop skills, attributes and values in our young people.
Last year’s product was a folding portable seat which was popular with sporting groups and picnickers.
This year Mosman YAA chose their product, elected a Managing Director, Finance Director, Secretary, Marketing Director, Sales Director and Production Director – all with a team of workers under them.
They have until October to sell the product, after which they wind up the company and direct any profit back to their shareholders and to a charity of their choice.
Young Achievers learn about teamwork and develop confidence and practical skills which will serve them well when they compete for jobs in the workplace.
Mosman YAA are taking orders for their gorgeous gumboots and selling at Saturday local markets:
- 4 August and 1 September – Mosman
- 19 August – Bondi
- 25 August and 22 September – Kirribilli
