The Mayor's Column
What are you reading at the moment?
We often ask this of our friends, sharing ideas and discussing and recommending our favourite latest book. I am enjoying the warm and wonderful book about families The Alphabet Sisters by Australian author Monica McInerney.
Mosman Library hosts a regular series of author events and the next one is Wednesday 22 August at 7.00pm at the Library with US thriller writer Jeffrey Deaver who will be discussing his latest novel The Sleeping Doll. If you miss an author’s evening you can still hear and see it on the Library’s webcasts.
I would be bereft not to have something engaging to read. Reading is such a pleasure. Fortunately the Internet and all the technology that takes up so much of our time has not kept us away from books. Books are so portable and such a stimulant for the imagination.
Children are still reading. Look at the popularity of Harry Potter and some of our terrific Australian children’s literature.
Children’s Book Week is celebrated from 18 to 24 August and Mosman Library is showcasing its special services. Children can attend a puppet show presented by puppeteer Murray Raine on Thursday 23 August at 3.45 pm. There are interactive activities too, with competitions for different age groups.
Our Library has terrific resources. Visit in person to enjoy a quiet read or choose your books, DVDs, CDs or visit on line. You find a list of all the new acquisitions every month in the Library or on the Library’s website. There are two evening Book Clubs which meet once a month on Tuesday and Thursday. As well as the usual the Starfish and Wired clubs for young people, there are home library services for those who are housebound and lots more, seven days a week.
Information at the Library or on the Council website.
