The Mayor's Column

Mosman is blessed with a variety of strong sporting clubs which form an integral part of our community, where friendships are made and healthy lifestyles promoted.

Two of these clubs will soon be celebrating important milestones.

Mosman Cricket Club was founded in 1908 and they have already begun celebrations in anticipation of their centenary year.

This club has produced two Mosman cricketers who captained the Australian Cricket Team, Alan Border and Ian Craig, along with many others who played internationally and those who just love the game. Importantly, the club continues to provide cricket for our kids and I am pleased to hear that in the next year will be adding a girls’ team.

The two cricket ovals are a source of great pride to the community. Alan Border Oval in the heart of our civic centre is a gem, a green space in the heart of Mosman where a game can be watched at leisure sitting in the surrounding parkland. The club has plans to restore the pavilion and to create a museum to house photos and memorabilia.

Rawson Park is a first grade cricket venue with a club which has been restored after suffering a fire this year. I visited our Federal member Tony Abbott and was successful in a request for a grant of $172k for storm water harvesting to water Rawson Park and the soon to be developed Drill Hall Common precinct.

Mosman Baseball Club is celebrating its 80th year with a surge of enthusiasm. This sport flourished in earlier times, with many well-known sports people honing their skills through the game. It lost popularity for a number of years but now there is a revival and a membership drive. This is a non-contact, fun sport open to all ages, boys and girls, men and women, on Sundays in the summer season at Middle Head Oval, where you are invited to their birthday celebrations at an Open Day on Sunday 16 September – for more information go to www.mosman.baseball.com.au.
