The Mayor's Column

Cr Denise Wilton

Music is such an important part of our lives, whether sharing the listening experience at a concert, privately renewing one’s spirit with our own favourites, or having the joy of performing. The lucky people are those who bring us music with the talent to sing, play an instrument, compose or conduct.

Community musical groups provide us with these opportunities and are a vital part of our social fabric. In Mosman, we are fortunate to have a variety of groups in which to actively participate or to enjoy as audience.

Mosman Orchestra is a community-based group which rehearses and performs in the local community. The members range from secondary school students to retirees, from all walks of life, bound together by the love of music, playing a wide range of music.

The standard of Mosman Orchestra is professional under the conductor and musical director Andrew de Riccio, and I am eagerly looking forward to attending one of their upcoming performances, which include Beethoven’s Triple Concerto and Brahms Symphony No 1. The venue is the Grand Hall of the Mosman Art Gallery & Community Centre on Friday 21, Saturday 22 or the matinee on Sunday 23 September. Tickets are available at the door. More information available from www.mosmanorchestra.org.au.

Mosman Musical Society has been delighting our community for over 100 years, as one of Australia’s oldest continuously running societies. Many well-known artists have performed in their productions over the years. This year there will be eight performances of A Night on Broadway, a cornucopia of Broadway blockbusters and classics. The atmosphere will be intimate, with seating at tables in the newly refurbished hall at the Mosman Returned Servicemen’s Club. The dates are from October 19 to 27, bookings www.mca-tix.com or 1300 306 776.

Encouraging young musical talent, Council is sponsoring our own ‘Idol’ contest, with the Mosman SuperStar talent quest for soloists or groups between the ages of 12 and 18. Auditions are on Saturdays 6 and 13 October. There are lucrative prizes but best of all the top 10 chosen will be performing as part of the Mosman Festival on Sunday 28 October. More information and registration form on our website or ring 9978 4000.
