The Mayor's Column

Come on Mosman! Let’s make a real commitment to the environment.

We were brave enough to measure our suburban ecological footprint in 2005 when Council organised a project, Living Within the Means Of Nature – Ecological Footprint Project, which showed that on average each Mosman resident has a footprint of 14.7 global hectares, almost twice the Australian average and almost six times the global earth share. If everyone on the planet had the same lifestyle we would need another seven planet earths to support us.

Six households were generous enough to participate in the programme. With Council staff they devised a plan of action to reduce their footprint. The results showed that a few changes to living habits made a significant difference, and their stories inspired others to follow suit. That study is still available on Council’s website as well as Mosman Council’s Environmental Sustainability Policy (PDF 20KB). You can assess your own ecological footprint at the Powerhouse Museum website and click on Bigfoot.

Attend the public meeting hosted by Mosman Council and organised by local community environmental groups CEFE – Clean Energy For Eternity, and WFCA – Women For Change Alliance. Learn how to reduce your impact on the environment by hearing inspirational speakers and experts on green power.

Speakers at this meeting include Dr Matthew Nott, recipient of NSW Green Globe Energy Champion in 2006 who spearheaded a successful campaign in Bega to commit to a 50% reduction in community energy by 2020. Neighbouring shires have taken on the target and Mosman is the first city-based community to hold such a meeting. There will be representatives from our schools, businesses and community organizations.

Mosman, let us be the municipality to lead the way!!
