The Mayor's Column
Over 400 Mosman households have accepted the challenge and reduced the volume of their putrescible or ‘wet’ garbage wheelie bins, and the rollout of the new smaller red lidded bins will start in early July.
Collectively, those residents who have reduced their bin size share in a saving of $80,000. More importantly, they are assisting in reducing Mosman’s ecological footprint with 1.25 million litres of garbage capacity being diverted from landfill.
This is a fantastic effort!
Annually, one garbage truck can be removed from service for one month.
Over the past 12 months Mosman’s recycling service has greatly improved with the introduction of wheelie bins rather than the smaller and cumbersome open crates.
By increasing households’ recycling capacity with the introduction of the new bins I am told that our diversion rate from landfill is showing steady improvement and when the NSW Department of Environment and Climate Change does their annual audit next month I am sure Mosman will be recognized as one of Sydney’s leading recyclers.
Mosman’s putrescible waste is transported to the Belrose/Bare Creek landfill site which will reach the end of its life next year and Mosman’s waste will then have to be sent to a transfer station, and may even need to be transported as far away as Goulburn.
Together with the SHOROC councils of Manly, Pittwater and Warringah Councils, we believe that we all should continue to dispose of our garbage within in our own region.
Negotiations between the SHOROC Councils are complete to form Kimbriki Environmental Enterprises at our jointly controlled Terrey Hills site, pending final approval of the Minister for Local Government.
The vision of the Councils to run our own alternate waste technology at Kimbriki and to even further reduce our waste to landfill is slowly becoming a reality.
I hope to share some more exciting news in this regard in the near future.
