Schools
The following programs were implemented across local primary schools in 2007.
Northern Sydney Region Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge 2007
The Northern Sydney Region Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge is a regional waste education event supported by Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, Manly, Mosman, and Ryde councils, and proudly sponsored by WSN Environmental Solutions, a responsible waste solutions provider for the region.
As part of the Challenge students were asked to collect, sort and weigh rubbish from a normal school day; implement discussions on ways to reduce, reuse and recycle “lunch rubbish”; and hold a Rubbish Free Lunch Day to see how they performed.
This year Beauty Point, Blessed Sacrament, Queenwood Junior, and Sacred Heart primary schools represented Mosman Council area in the Challenge! Over 4900 students from 15 schools across the Northern Sydney region took up the Challenge to actively tackle climate change through waste avoidance, reducing, reusing and recycling their waste at school and at home.
A brief summary of solutions implemented within schools as part of the Challenge included introducing worm farms or composting systems to take food waste; using reusable lunch containers and drink bottles to minimise waste; using lunch items with less packaging; and improved paper and container recycling systems.
The winner of the regional awards as a result of the Rubbish Free Lunch Challenge, winning over $2000 worth of prizes, was Sacred Heart Primary School from Mosman.
Lowest Rubbish Weight (per student) after the Rubbish Free Lunch Day:
- Sacred Heart Primary School
Biggest Change in rubbish weight (per student) before and after the Rubbish Free Lunch Day.
- Sacred Heart Primary School
The results will help to provide information for school environmental strategies, and promote further waste reduction and avoidance at school and at home.
Keep Australia Beautiful’s Waste Watchers Program
Mosman Council invited the Keep Australia Beautiful (NSW) mobile education unit, Waste Watchers, to visit five primary schools in the Mosman Council area in August 2007. Waste Watchers, which has been working in schools across New South Wales since 1994, challenges children’s knowledge, values and attitudes on waste issues and encourages children to think more about how they can help care for the environment.

Free Eco Garden Workshops
Kimbriki Recycling and Waste Disposal Centre run a series of Eco Garden Workshops. The Eco Garden is a place to learn how to apply organic gardening principles to everyday gardening. This includes composting, worm farming, mulching and low waste organic gardening.
Waste To Art
During the 2007 Mosman Festival, Council ran a number of waste education activities aimed at encouraging residents to be creative and reuse waste. Activities included hat making out of recycled materials, making toys from plastic lids and painting reusable calico bags. This activity was proudly sponsored by URM Pty Ltd, Council’s waste and recycling service provider.
Clean Up Australia Day
Clean Up Australia Day is a campaign aimed at encouraging communities to clean up their local environment by collecting and removing rubbish. Each year Mosman Council supports this initiative by providing onground support to volunteer groups and the removal of collected rubbish from clean up sites. The next Clean Up Australia Day is Sunday 2 March 2008. Site registrations open November 2007.
