Robert Wheatley made 17 appearances for Australian junior teams between 1979-81 and played in the 1981 FIFA World Youth Championships in Australia. The gutsy Young Socceroos reached the quarter-finals in Sydney, where they were defeated by a single goal, scored five minutes from full-time by the German side who went on to win the tournament.

Between 1982 and 1989, Robert Wheatley won 11 senior caps for the Socceroos, playing in four World Cup qualifying matches.

He has a distinguished record in the National Soccer League, making more than 300 appearances, winning back to back Grand Finals for Marconi Fairfield in 1988 and 1989 and just failing to win an unprecedented treble, going down to Sydney Olympic in 1990 by two goals to nil.

In 1993, with Heidelberg United, he won the National Cup.

Robert Wheatley continues to be involved in the World Game, and was coach of Mosman Soccer Club in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
