Ian started sailing at the age of six under the tutelage of a family friend.

He also played soccer for Mosman Juniors and rugby with Mosman Colts, before getting involved in triathlons.

In 1988 he was selected to represent Australia in the World Cup Triathlon held on the Gold Coast.

Since then he has competed in a number of sailing races. In 1992, he was crewman of Challenge Australia, the challenger for the America's Cup. In 1993, he was part of the Australian team at the 50-foot World Cup, on Ragamuffin. In 1993 he competed for the Admiral's Cup on Ragamuffin, and in 1994 for the Kenwood Cup on Brindabella.

He has also sailed in numerous Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races.

Ian is now a father of two children. These days he fits in the odd session on the surfboard when time permits.
