Andrew Town was born in Mosman in 1941 and grew up in Beauty Point. He continues to live in Mosman, after moving back to the area in the 1970.

After attending Mosman Public School where he played representative rugby union for Sydney, Andrew Town attended Sydney Grammar School where he played in the 1st 15. On leaving Sydney Grammar, Andrew played 100 first grade games for Northern Suburbs Rugby Football Club. He also represented NSW on several occasions and was then selected to represent Australia in the touring Wallaby team to New Zealand in 1962.
