From the Mayor - 24 March 2021

Posted on Wednesday 24 March 2021

With the holidays approaching I ask the community to draw on the traditional Easter symbols of renewal and transformation to give us strength, hope and wisdom to not let this historic moment pass without real change occurring. Australian of the Year Grace Tame has used her public voice to reinforce the principle that we can’t fix a problem we don’t discuss – and so change begins with conversations. Sustained and safe conversations, initiated by parents and families, educators, politicians and law makers. As Vice President of the Northern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils, I am an active member of a delegation visiting all our State and Federal members of Parliament and I will ensure the subject of gender inequality and violence against women is raised and discussed.

No doubt there will be plenty of conversations and fun to be had during the upcoming 2021 Mosman Seniors Festival with one of the highlights being the Seniors Table Tennis team defending their 2020 tournament win against the Mosman Youth team. The month-long program is filled with activities to delight a multitude of tastes and interests. Visit events.mosman.nsw.gov.au/seniorsfestival for more information and booking details.

Bravo to the Mosman Junior Hockey Club recently named the NSW Community Hockey Club of the Year for 2020 in recognition of their inclusive nature and positive ethos and culture. In congratulating the Club, I thanked the leadership for their role, along with our other fantastic and popular clubs, in promoting junior sport in Mosman. For the upcoming start of the AFL, Football and Rugby seasons our ovals are looking fabulous after significant expenditure to upgrade irrigation processes, returfing of the playing surfaces and buckets of TLC from our dedicated Council staff and groundskeepers.

Neighbour Day is this Sunday and the 2021 theme is ‘Every Day is Neighbour Day’ because communities where people know each other report better mental health, are safer for children and are more resilient when adversity strikes.

In closing, I welcome the start of the community COVID-19 vaccination program and I take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and happy Easter.
