Paul first learnt to sail on Vee Jays in 1952 and 1953 as a teenager.

He came to competitive sailing in his early twenties when he bought a Soling with Denis Power in 1968. Paul competed with Rex Dengate and Power as skipper sailing in Division Two from Middle Harbour Yacht Club. Over the next twenty years Paul competed in a range of local regattas building up through the State and National titles.

In 1989 he was part of the Australian Soling Class Crew that competed in the Soling Class World Championships in Hungary.

In 1992 he was manager of the Australian team at the Soling World Championships in Holland.

Paul was official measurer for the Soling Class at the Pre-Olympics and the Sydney 2000 Olympics and an on-water judge. He is a member of the Yachting Association of NSW Foundation which raises funds for youth, disabled and Olympic Class Sailors.

In 1998 he was awarded the Geert Gakker Award for services to the International Soling Class. He has also received the Premier's Award for Services to Sport and the Community and the Centenary Award 2003.
