From the Mayor - 25 October 2023

Posted on Wednesday 25 October 2023

We are entering the final days of the Festival of Mosman and on behalf of the entire community I send sincere and heartfelt thanks to the wonderful hard working Mosman Council events team, led by Ivana Pepic for making the Festival a resounding success. There are a number of family-favourite events still to come including the Children’s Fair and the Halloween Cinema, the First Nations Cultural event at Balmoral and finally the much-loved closing Festival event Pet’s Day Out this Sunday. For information on all remaining events please go to festivalofmosman.net.

On Saturday 11 November residents are invited to attend the Mosman RSL Sub-Branch’s Annual Remembrance Day Commemorative Service, commencing at the Mosman Cenotaph at 10.30am and reaching its solemn conclusion at 11am. This service remembers those who died or suffered for Australia's cause in all wars and armed conflicts. Our thoughts are also with those experiencing the devastating humanitarian impact of war and conflict in the Middle East and Ukraine.

With statistics sadly telling us the scourge of domestic and family violence is not abating, I urge the community to support Mosman’s 2nd annual Walk for Women on Friday 1 December. We will gather as one at Rawson Oval to commence our walk at 10am and conclude at the Georges Heights Headland Park Artist Precinct, where under the shade of umbrellas we will hear addresses by Kerry Chikarovski AM, former Board Director of ‘Our Watch’, a national leader in primary prevention of violence against women and their children; Phil Kearns AM, former Australian Wallaby, dual Rugby World Cup winner and founder and Patron of the Humpty Dumpty Balmoral Burn; and Commander Paul Devaney, Detective Superintendent, North Shore Police Area Command.

In closing, I do note that while the national result was No, all six Mosman booths voted Yes in the Referendum. Public elected figures need to, at all times, uphold and respect the important role they play in progressing democracy and enhancing both trust and truth in government. The mushrooming dark forces of mis and disinformation need to be urgently addressed with transparency and accountability being two of the best actions governments and the media can take to protect our precious democracy.
