Ending gender-based violence
‘Stop Domestic Violence – It Happens on the North Shore Too’ is the slogan of the Lower North Shore Domestic Violence Network in highlighting the fact that domestic and family violence impacts globally and locally, including in relatively affluent areas such as Sydney’s North Shore.
Each year Mosman Council supports the Lower North Shore Domestic Violence Network in marking 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence, commencing on the International Day For The Elimination Of Violence Against Women on 25 November and concluding on International Human Rights Day on 10 December.
A program of events is being held across Northern Sydney to raise awareness and call for action to end violence against women and girls, including domestic and family violence and sexual violence. Successful events already held have included the launch of the White Ribbon Garden in North Sydney; the ‘Say NO to Violence Walk’ on the Northern Beaches, and a talk at Royal North Shore Hospital on ’16 Days of Activism – In the World of Work’.
The events complement the ongoing work of the Network to provide information and resources to people impacted by domestic and family violence and to build the capacity of workers to support them. A very successful workshop for community services workers was held earlier this year in Mosman, better equipping them in responding and supporting those affected.
As part of the 16 Days events, Mosman Council will again support the Network’s information stall at Mosman markets on Saturday 7 December 8.30am to 3pm. We encourage community members to visit and find out more about support available and how they can contribute to community efforts for elimination of violence against women.
The Network will also hold ‘1minutesilence4violence’ as one minute’s silence remembering victims of DV at the Concourse Chatswood on Wednesday 4 December at 1pm.
