Mosman marks International Day of People with Disability

More than 100 students from four local schools have taken part in a range of Mosman Council-organised activities to raise awareness, understanding and acceptance of disability ahead of International Day of People with Disability.

The event, which was held on Thursday 23 November, celebrated the achievements and contributions of people with disability.

Students from Beauty Point Public School, Middle Harbour Public School, Mosman Public School and Queenwood Junior School participated in the following activities:

• Mouth Painting with artist Andrew Grant in the Mosman Art Gallery Sculpture Garden – participants painted using paintbrushes held with their mouths
• Blind Cricket NSW game at Village Green – students participated in Blind Cricket Matches led by Blind Sports NSW and Blind Cricket NSW players
• Music Therapy with Anita Connell from Tune In Music Therapy at Mosman Youth Centre – students explored disabilities that may not always be seen and looked at how music therapy can help
• Guide Dog Talk and Blindfold Challenge with Guide Dogs NSW/ACT in the Mosman Council Chambers
• Deaf Soccer on Allan Border Oval – coaches from Mosman Football guided participants using ear plugs through soccer games.

International Day of People with Disability is officially celebrated on 3 December every year. The theme for 2017 International Day of People with Disability is Transformation towards sustainable and resilient society for all. The main idea of the theme is to ‘leave no one behind’ and empowers people with disability to be active contributors of society.
