Playgrounds
Mosman has 14 public playgrounds. These playgrounds vary from simple swings and climbing structures to the latest in playground equipment and play design incorporating public art, educational features and equipment for junior and senior users.
Playground improvement program
Council has adopted a playground improvement program which will see all playgrounds in Mosman progressively updated. Council’s vision is for its playgrounds to be gathering places enjoyed by families, children and their carers and providing opportunities for socialisation, physical challenge, imagination and relaxation. To date, eight of Council’s playgrounds have been updated. Generally, Council undertakes an upgrade of two playgrounds each financial year.
Many issues need to be considered when Council undertakes a playground improvement project. These include the requirements and preferences of local residents, recreational needs of the broader Mosman community, site issues and constraints, existing facilities, other endorsed Council plans and programs, location and level of use and available resources. Council undertakes to balance all these issues by consulting with the community, receiving advice from industry and through the judgement and consideration of Councils professional staff and elected Councillors.
Council manages and maintains its playgrounds through its Parks and Gardens Management Contract. The contract requirements include weekly inspections by field staff and formal quarterly inspections and safety reports from industry professionals. Formal reporting is undertaken considering relevant Australian Standards. Much of Mosman’s playground equipment is very old and does not comply with current Australian Standards.
Unless a piece of equipment is considered to have a high hazard potential (e.g. high likelihood of an incident or failure occurring resulting in an injury) that piece of equipment is retained. The alternative would be to remove all non-complying equipment resulting in greatly reduced playground facilities. Council makes every effort to practically manage and maintain playgrounds with the resources available. Parents and supervisors should satisfy themselves that equipment is safe for use by children under their care before allowing children to play on the equipment.
