From the Mayor - 22 February 2023

Posted on Wednesday 22 February 2023

As we leave summer behind and prepare to embrace autumn’s change, I have been listening to Guardian Australia podcasts exploring happiness. The Australian author and academic Dr Kathryn Heyman believes happiness is a by-product that arrives when we are focused on something else – learning, doing, connecting. Here in Mosman, the month ahead provides a great array of community activities providing wonderful opportunities to learn, do and connect with information and regular updates available on Council’s website.

The creative endeavours of our artistic community will be on full display at two wonderful community events, both proudly supported by Mosman Council. The Mosman High School Art Committee’s highly successful Mosman Art Walk is back and runs until 12 March. I encourage residents to meet family and friends and take a stroll through Mosman following the walk route. Down at Mosman Rowers, the 2023 ‘Art at the Rowers’ free exhibition will run throughout March with renowned Australian artist, Ben Quilty judging the event.

The Mosman Art Gallery will play host to two very special events in March. On 8 March I will be in conversation with former Queensland Premier and current CEO of the Australian Banking Association Anna Bligh AC, at Council’s sold-out International Women’s Day Breakfast but there are still tickets available for our Dementia Forum on 21 March when Dementia Australia’s National Patron Ita Buttrose AC OBE will be our very special guest speaker with bookings essential via trybooking.com/CGBAZ or call 9978 4128 for more information.

I am happy to inform the community that Council unanimously resolved to renew our General Manager, Dominic Johnson’s contract of employment to come into effect in August 2023. Council values Dominic’s integrity and strong positive leadership and welcomes his decision to stay committed to Mosman for another five years. Importantly, Council will meet in March to fine tune and finalise our 2023/24 budget, which will contain a number of major capital works programs including plans to upgrade facilities at both Balmoral and Georges Heights Ovals.

In closing, I trust the remainder of World Pride 2023, including our Youth Centre’s block party and the upcoming official opening ceremony at Sydney’s Domain, is a happy, safe and joyous occasion for all participants.
