Tree treats for zoo herd

Natural Christmas trees collected from Mosman homes post-festive season found new purpose at Taronga Zoo.
Council’s annual collection of trees from outside residential properties was held this week as part of waste and recycling services.
Selected specimens were delivered to the zoo, to be used for food or play for the zoo’s elephant herd.
Keepers regularly provide enrichment items to encourage natural behaviours and keep the zoo’s animals active, healthy and sharp-minded.
At certain times of year, the enrichment may have a theme, with past programs for elephants featuring scarecrows at Halloween and giant paper mâché eggs at Easter.
