Australian Reading Hour at Barry O’Keefe Library

The Australian Library and Information Association’s Australian Reading Hour is an important annual campaign encouraging Australians of all ages to read for one hour on Thursday, 20 September, 2018.

To coincide with the Reading Hour 2018, Mosman Library Service is hosting a special story-time session for families to encourage parents to read aloud to children and to highlight the importance of reading in developing literacy skills.

Rowena Lee, former Headmaster of Sydney Grammar School St Ives Preparatory School, will present ‘How Reading Aloud Can Change Children’s Lives’ followed by Storytime. The sessions will introduce songs, nursery rhymes, finger plays and stories encouraging children’s ability to listen and comprehend, as well as expanding their receptive and expressive language.

The Reading Hour talks will be on Thursday 20 September 2018, 10.00am to 11.00am prior to Pre-Schoolers’ Storytime.

The sessions are free and no bookings are required.

In addition, the Library will run a competition – Library members will be invited to name their favourite book to spend an hour with, and, in 50 words or fewer, say why they love this book. Prizes include book vouchers and chocolates.
