International Women’s Day 2019 with Professor Marie Bashir

Posted on Monday 11 February 2019

One of Australia’s most remarkable women, Professor The Honourable Dame Marie Bashir AD CVO, will share her personal experiences at a breakfast hosted by Mosman Council to celebrate International Women’s Day 2019.

The second-longest serving and first female Governor of NSW, Professor Bashir is also known for her many accomplishments in the fields of psychiatry and mental health, tertiary education and indigenous issues.

Amongst more than 70 awards and honours bestowed upon her over a distinguished career, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in 1988 for her services to child and adolescent health, a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2001, and invested by Her Majesty The Queen with the insignia of a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 2006.

She was a beloved Governor of NSW for 13 years, from 2001 until her retirement in 2014. That year she was also made a Dame of the Order of Australia in the Queen’s Birthday Honours: “For extraordinary and pre-eminent achievement and merit in service to the administration, public life, and people of New South Wales, to medicine, particularly as an advocate for improved mental health outcomes for the young, marginalised and disadvantaged, to international relations, through the promotion of collaborative health programs, and as a leader in tertiary education”.

Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan said Council was privileged to have Professor Bashir as guest speaker for its International Women’s Day 2019 event.

“It is an honour to have Professor Bashir as our guest speaker. It is rare for anyone to make such great strides, and achieve such a depth of contribution for others, in their lifetime. Professor Bashir is an extraordinary and inspiring role model for everyone, and women in particular,” Mayor Corrigan said.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2019 is #BalanceforBetter with a call to accelerate gender equality, and promote gender balance as essential for economies and communities to thrive.

Mosman Council’s International Women’s Day Breakfast will be held at Mosman Art Gallery, 7.30am-9.00am on International Women’s Day, Friday 8 March. Cost is $15 per person and RSVPs are due by 1 March. Spaces are limited and bookings are essential. For more information and to book visit: events.mosman.gov.au
