Julianne Ross Allcorn wins Viewers’ Choice Award - 2018 Mosman Art Prize
Julianne Ross Allcorn (NSW) has won the 2018 Mosman Art Prize Viewers’ Choice Award with Bush Gossips and quiet moments, a large but detailed mixed media painting on wood panels inspired by animals and plant life within the Australian bush.
Congratulating Julianne on her win, John Cheeseman, Director, Mosman Art Gallery said, “Julianne’s quintessentially Australian painting was the clear winner at this year’s Viewers’ Choice. With Mosman Art Prize showcasing the best examples of contemporary painting in Australia, this annual exhibition continues to draw large attendances and significant public support. We’ve hosted near to 9,000 visitors this year and there is no thought of the Prize slowing down.”
The Mosman Art Society has once again generously supported this award with a $1000 cash prize.
On hearing the news Roseville based Ross Allcorn said, “I am very excited, honoured and humbled at being the winner of the Viewers’ Choice, very much unexpected!”
Describing the work Ross Allcorn said: “The flora and fauna that surrounds the extended family’s hideaway in the Burralong Valley, Lower Hunter and around my garden studio in Roseville, Sydney is where I spend hours sketching, planning and playing in my journals. I also spend hours walking and immersing myself into the bush surrounds, listening and gathering ideas to create my artworks. Trying to capture the moments of conversation between the birds and insects, and the split moment light is caught on a leaf or tree trunk.”
About Julianne Ross Allcorn
Ross Allcorn has been a practicing artist and art teacher for over 20 years. She has been a finalist in a number of prizes including the Gosford Art Prize, Ravenswood Art Prize, and the Hunters Hill Art Prize where she also won the People’s Choice Award in 2018. Ross Allcorn has had solo exhibitions throughout Sydney and has participated in a number of group exhibitions including at Cessnock Regional Gallery, Manly Arts Festival and the Royal Botanical Gardens.
The 2018 Mosman Art Prize presented 105 finalists from over 660 entries across Australia. This year’s guest judge artist and previous Prize winner, Cressida Campbell, awarded the major acquisitive prize of $50,000 to Sydney artist, Natasha Walsh for her painting on copper, The cicada.
Now in its 71st year, the Mosman Art Prize is the longest running, continuous municipal art prize in Australia. Proud of its rich history in fostering emerging and established artists the Prize is Mosman Art Gallery’s flagship annual exhibition.
