'Keeping Score: Tracing Time'
Mosman Art Gallery announces its second iteration of the collaboration with Parramatta Artists' Studios.
Keeping Score: Tracing Time, is a continuation of the cultural and collaborative exchange between the two institutions. It showcases new commissioned work of seven mid-career artists who are alumni of the Parramatta Artists' Studios (PAS) at Mosman Art Gallery.
Keeping Score: Tracing Time, will feature the work of: Tom Blake, Harriet Body, Jess Bradford, Cindy Yuen-Zhe Chen, Kerrie Kenton, Garry Trinh and Justine Youssef.
The exhibition looks at the notion of marking time, observing how we do time, finding new ways to pass or keep track of time. In thinking about what this exhibition might be, both for the artists and audiences, the conversation between the curators naturally moved to the analysis of the strange times we have been living in, and our shared experiences of the mutability of time.
In early 2022, Joel Spring was invited to facilitate an Ideas Incubator for the participating artists and curators. Joel, a Wiradjuri man, artist, writer and academic, presented on ideas of non-Western time, creating space for generative conversations while the artists were in the conceptual stage of making. Especially significant in these conversations was sharing in the cycles of life experienced during lockdown, the loss of significant loved ones and the birth of new ones. These experiences had brought into focus both the circular experience of time, and the need to break from the fast-paced shallow time of modern society.
The works created for Keeping Score: Tracing Time then, are of this pandemic era, and reflective of our shifting and heightened sense of time. In the works we experience deeply personal responses to chance and repetition, deep time, intergenerational time and memory. These works are gentle, and reflect on time with care. Spending time with these works will give us space to do the same.

Working as part of a community has established Parramatta Artists' Studios as a leading production space for contemporary practice. Since its establishment in 2006, Parramatta Artists' Studios has supported artists to work and develop their careers in Parramatta. In this period more than 100 emerging, mid-career and established artists have participated in the program building PAS’s reputation as an incubator of artistic excellence. PAS offers the largest studio facility in western Sydney, supporting artists by providing professional studio spaces, exhibition opportunities and curatorial mentorship, while encouraging engagement with creative communities not just within Parramatta’s growing cultural sector but with wider Sydney, interstate and international audiences.
Mosman Art Gallery is delighted to partner with Parramatta Artists' Studios for the second installment of this partnership. Keeping Score: Tracing Time is a joint role exhibition that encourages curatorial dialogue and the exchange of ideas across greater Sydney, while working with seven creative practitioners.
