The Art of Ageing in Mosman

Mastering the art of living and ageing well is the subject of a challenging new exhibition, The Art of Ageing, which features a selection of photographs from a touring exhibition hosted at Mosman Seniors Centre from 11 November to 6 December.

The NSW Government-commissioned exhibition features diverse older people such as a learner driver, gymnast and ukulele player as it celebrates the rich lives of older people living in regional NSW, challenging perceptions of them through strong images and stories.

Mosman is following the ageing population trend with the median age for Mosman residents at 42 years, compared with 36 years for Greater Sydney, with population forecasts predicting that people 60 years and over in Mosman will increase from 18% to 21% of the total population by 2036.

People of all ages are encouraged to visit the exhibition, which will be officially opened on Thursday 14 November at 3pm by Mayor of Mosman Carolyn Corrigan with guest speaker and co-director of the UNSW’s Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing, Professor Henry Brodaty AO, who will share his extensive knowledge of the evidence around healthy ageing and brain function and combating ageism.

“We need to challenge outdated and negative views of ageing and ageist stereotypes,” Cr Corrigan said. “Older residents make a significant and welcome contribution to the Mosman community, including a strong presence in volunteering and in Mosman’s civic, artistic and cultural life.

“I hope this exhibition will facilitate a community dialogue that celebrates the value, experience and contribution older people bring to community life as we want to promote an inclusive community for all generations and where older people are active, healthy and engaged.”
